Jazz Festival Montreal

Wayfinding

Context

The Montreal International Jazz Festival is one of the world’s largest jazz festivals, held annually in Montreal, Canada. Featuring hundreds of performances across various genres, it attracts over 2 million visitors. The event, with many free outdoor concerts, creates a vibrant atmosphere in the city each summer.

Challenge

Montreal Jazz Festival has asked me to create a wayfinding system to organize around the area the shows will take place. It is important that these signs are easy to access and to understand since they tell people where everything is and how to get there from the location they are in.

pictograms that will be placed on signs

Approach

To create a clear and intuitive wayfinding system, I used contrast and symbolic elements to differentiate key areas. This approach ensures easy navigation while reinforcing the overall theme, making the design both functional and visually cohesive.

Solution

The wayfinding system uses the deconstructed piano concept, with white signs for stages and black signs for services, creating a clear visual distinction. This color-coded approach ensures easy navigation, helping visitors quickly identify performance areas and amenities. The design ties into the festival’s musical theme while providing a practical, intuitive experience for attendees.
